There is currently little published research regarding the nutritional management of patients with an asbestos related disease. Evidence based guidelines for nutritional management of other cancer groups have shown that nutrition screening and intervention can improve nutritional status, quality of life and improve clinical outcomes. This presentation will highlight the results of a recent systematic review of evidence regarding nutritional status, body composition, quality of life and clinical outcomes in patients with asbestosis or mesothelioma. The results of a recent pilot study will be highlighted demonstrating the strong relationship between nutritional status and quality of life in terms of global health status (r= -0.822, P<0.05) , role function (r= -0.822, P<0.01) and social function (r= -0.784, P<0.05) in this group. The potential role of intensive nutrition intervention in this group will be discussed.
